The Omega-level mutant who can heal any wound or end any life instantly
In short: Joshua Foley, known as Elixir, possesses the rare ability to reshape organic matter at will. From curing incurable viruses to resurrecting the dead, his power is so immense that he is classified as an Omega-level mutant. Yet, this god-like control over biology comes with a heavy psychological and physical toll.
First appearing in 2003, Joshua Foley began as a member of a hostile anti-mutant faction called the Reavers. His life changed dramatically when he discovered his own mutant nature, leading him to the Xavier Institute. His powers initially manifested as a golden glow, but after he killed the antagonist William Stryker in retaliation for the death of a friend, his skin permanently shifted to black, signaling his capacity for lethal biological manipulation.
Elixir’s abilities are defined by his mastery over organic structure. He can purge diseases like the Legacy Virus, boost the powers of others, and regenerate his own body, rendering him effectively immortal. His most significant role emerged during the Krakoan Age as a member of The Five—a specialized group including Egg, Proteus, Tempus, and Hope Summers—who utilized their combined gifts to bring deceased mutants back to life. This process is so taxing that observers like Magneto and Monet have speculated that attempting mass resurrection could shatter his sanity.
Despite his immense potential, Elixir has often struggled with the weight of his actions. Whether he is healing a pregnant Wolfsbane by transferring strength from her unborn child or resurrecting himself after being shot, his path is marked by trauma. He has been recognized as one of the most powerful X-Men, even earning a spot on lists of the most underrated characters in Marvel history as of 2024. His journey from a misguided youth to a cornerstone of mutant survival remains one of the most complex arcs in the X-Men mythos.
