The Welsh driver who finally conquered the World Rally Championship
In short: After years of finishing as the runner-up, Elfyn Evans has finally reached the summit. The Welshman has secured the 2026 World Rally Championship title, becoming the first driver from Wales to claim the prestigious world drivers' championship.
For years, Elfyn Evans was defined by his proximity to glory. Between 2020 and 2025, the Welsh professional driver finished as the WRC runner-up on five separate occasions, often losing the title by razor-thin margins. In 2021, he missed out on the championship to his Toyota teammate Sébastien Ogier by just 0.6 seconds. His career began in 2006 behind the wheel of a Nissan Micra. During his early years, he competed in the Formula 1000 Forest Rally Championship.
His journey to the top was marked by significant technical shifts. While he excelled with the non-hybrid Toyotas in 2020 and 2021, he admitted to struggling with the hybrid cars introduced at the start of the 2022 season. This slump in form coincided with a season where he failed to secure any wins, finishing fourth in the standings. He also achieved success in the British Junior Rally championship and the UK Ford Fiesta Trophy series in 2010.
The momentum returned when hybrid systems were removed under new regulations. Evans led much of the 2025 season before Sébastien Ogier clinched the title in Saudi Arabia. This persistence culminated in 2026; after a strong start with two wins and five podiums, Evans was declared the 2026 World Rally Champion following Oliver Solberg's exit on the final stage of the Rally Italia Sardegna.
Evans's success is a family legacy. The son of 1996 British Rally Championship Champion Gwyndaf Evans, he has been supported by a family Ford dealership established by his great-grandfather in Dinas Mawddwy, which was renamed Gwyndaf Evans Motors in 1983. This family business was originally founded by his great-grandfather.
