A 1926 literary sensation sparks a modern cinematic exploration of revolutionary defiance
In short: Srijit Mukherji’s upcoming film, Emperor vs Sarat Chandra, dramatizes the life of India’s most popular 1920s author, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Centered on the 100th anniversary of his controversial novel Pather Dabi, the film examines the writer’s courageous resistance against British colonial rule and his intellectual correspondence with Rabindranath Tagore.
Published in August 1926, Pather Dabi became an instant sensation, selling out all available copies within a week. The novel’s revolutionary themes and direct challenge to the British Raj led the colonial government to ban the book in January 1927. The ban remained in place for over a decade until it was finally lifted in 1939, one year after Chattopadhyay died of liver cancer.
Director Srijit Mukherji, who also debuts as a film music composer for this project, frames the film as an examination of ideology and resistance. The title draws inspiration from the British Indian court case Emperor v. Aurobindo Ghosh. Beyond the plot of Pather Dabi, the narrative explores the evolution of Chattopadhyay’s writing career, including his earlier masterpieces like Parineeta and Devdas, while highlighting his societal influence and bravery in opposing the British Empire at the height of his fame.
The production process faced significant logistical shifts. Initially announced in August 2025, the film underwent changes in production houses and cast members due to new industry regulations regarding conflicting release dates. Originally slated for May 2026, the film is now scheduled for an October 2026 release to coincide with Durga Puja. The film features Tota Roy Choudhury as Chattopadhyay and Abir Chatterjee as the revolutionary protagonist Sabyasachi Mallick, with the story capturing the complex political atmosphere of 1920s Bengal.
Mukherji emphasizes that the film is not merely a biography but a look at the personalities and events of that era. By depicting the interactions between Chattopadhyay and figures like Rabindranath Tagore and Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, the film aims to honor the legacy of these historical figures. The production includes four songs, with Mukherji overseeing the soundtrack to reflect the period's spirit.
