A cinematic dream of independence stalled by the weight of history
In short: Can a film truly capture the spirit of a revolution? Director Mahesh Manjrekar spent seven years developing a period drama about seven legendary Maratha warriors seeking independence in 1674. Yet, despite high-profile casting and a massive budget, the project remains caught between historical reverence and production reality.
The film, titled Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat (The Brave Seven Marathas Ran In Madness), aims to chronicle the mission of seven warriors to realize the dream of Hindavi Swarajya. The production is notable for its ambitious casting, featuring Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar in an extended cameo as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Kumar’s involvement was specifically chosen for his physical resemblance to historical sketches, particularly his nose, and he spent 20 to 25 days training with specialists in diction and body language for his Marathi cinema debut.
The project has faced significant hurdles since its official announcement in November 2022. While principal photography began in December 2022 across Mumbai, Panhala, and Kolhapur, the production was plagued by delays. Originally scheduled for a Diwali 2023 release, the date was moved to avoid a clash with the film Tiger 3. By June 2024, half of the production was complete, but filming was eventually halted by producer Vaseem Qureshi due to financial problems arising from a higher-than-expected budget.
Beyond logistics, the film has sparked intense cultural debate. Local descendants and former officials have publicly opposed the project, accusing the director of distorting history by using fictitious names for real warriors. Additionally, the casting of Akshay Kumar drew heavy criticism from some viewers who cited his previous performance in Samrat Prithviraj. The film is intended for a multi-language release in Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, representing a high-stakes attempt to translate regional history into a mainstream epic.
