In short: Amora the Enchantress is a rare Marvel villain who renders Thor's physical might useless. A master of mind control and illusion, she has plagued the thunder god since 1964. While Thor smashes monsters, Amora uses her intellect and magical allure to turn his own allies and desires against him.

Amora, the original Enchantress, first appeared in Journey into Mystery #103 in April 1964. Unlike many Asgardian characters, she is not based on a specific figure from Norse mythology. Her powers are rooted in the manipulation of ambient magical energy, allowing her to cast illusions, teleport, and mind-control others. Her most potent weapon is her kiss, which can enslave a man for about a week. Because she prefers to avoid direct physical combat, she often uses minions like Skurge the Executioner to do her bidding, manipulating his devotion to her for her own ends.

Her relationship with Thor is defined by a complex mix of obsession and antagonism. She has repeatedly attempted to seduce him, often aligning with Loki to undermine his heroic efforts. Her schemes are frequently more cerebral than those of Thor's typical foes, forcing him to rely on his wits rather than his hammer, Mjolnir. Even when she joins teams like the Masters of Evil, her motivations remain rooted in enlightened self-interest. She has occasionally aided Asgard, such as during the war against Surtur, but she remains a volatile figure who has been both a lover to Thor and a victim of his enemies.

A second Enchantress, Sylvie Lushton, emerged in 2009. Created by Loki as a tool for chaos, she is an adolescent from Oklahoma who believes she is an exiled Asgardian. While she possesses powers similar to Amora, her origin is entirely artificial. The existence of two Enchantresses highlights the character's role as a symbol of manipulation and identity. Whether through Amora's calculated sorcery or Sylvie's unwitting chaos, the mantle of the Enchantress represents a persistent, psychological threat to the Marvel Universe that physical strength cannot easily overcome.
