In short: Enes Kanter was a rising NBA star with a bright future. But after publicly criticizing the Turkish government, his life transformed from professional athletics to a high-stakes battle of political conviction, leading him to legally change his name to Enes Kanter Freedom.

Born in Switzerland to Turkish parents, Enes Kanter’s ascent in the NBA was marked by immense physical talent. A standout prospect, he was the third overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft by the Utah Jazz. However, his career was shadowed by controversy long before he reached the professional ranks. The NCAA declared him permanently ineligible for college basketball at Kentucky after discovering he had received approximately $33,000 in excess benefits from Fenerbahçe.

His trajectory shifted dramatically in 2013 when he began criticizing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan following a corruption scandal. Following the failed coup attempt in July 2016, Kanter’s opposition intensified; he famously labeled Erdoğan the "Hitler of our century" on Twitter. The repercussions were personal and severe. His father, a professor at Trakya University, was dismissed from his position via government decree in September 2016, and his family publicly disowned him, urging him to change his surname.

Kanter’s political identity is deeply tied to his support for the Gülen movement, having attended Hizmet-affiliated schools since second grade. He maintains a close relationship with the movement's founder, Fethullah Gülen. This allegiance has led to significant professional and personal friction. Kanter has expressed fear that returning to Turkey could result in imprisonment or death. In late 2021, following the approval of his American citizenship, he officially changed his name to Enes Kanter Freedom, signaling a permanent break from his former identity.
