In short: Before Zoom became a global necessity, Eric Yuan was a student in China enduring ten-hour train rides to visit his girlfriend. Frustrated by the distance, he envisioned a way to connect virtually. This personal desire eventually fueled his journey to Silicon Valley and the creation of a multi-billion dollar empire.

Born in 1970 in Tai'an, China, Eric Yuan grew up in a family of geological engineers. His early entrepreneurial spirit was evident in the fourth grade when he collected construction scraps to recycle copper for cash. By 1987, while pursuing his undergraduate studies, the seeds of his future career were sown during long, arduous train journeys. He began to dream of software that could bridge the physical gap between people, an idea that would eventually define his professional life.

Yuan moved to Silicon Valley in 1997 after being inspired by a speech Bill Gates gave in Japan. His path was not easy; he applied for a United States visa nine times before succeeding. Upon arrival, he joined WebEx as one of its first 20 employees. When Cisco Systems acquired WebEx in 2007, Yuan rose to become vice president of engineering. However, his vision for a smartphone-friendly video conferencing system was rejected by Cisco management in 2011, prompting him to leave and establish Zoom Communications.

The company's trajectory shifted dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic as global reliance on remote work and education surged. By September 2020, Yuan's estimated net worth had reached US$16.4 billion, marking a 360% increase from the start of that year. His influence was recognized when he was named Time Businessperson of the Year in 2020. Looking toward the future, Yuan continues to innovate, recently announcing plans to integrate AI clones that could potentially attend meetings on behalf of users.

Yuan's life reflects a blend of persistence and technical foresight. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2007 and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2025. Today, he remains a central figure in the evolution of digital communication, constantly pushing the boundaries of how we interact in a virtual space.
