How a self-taught survivalist triggered a massive 48-day manhunt across the Pennsylvania wilderness.
In short: In 2014, Eric Frein ambushed a Pennsylvania State Police barracks, killing one trooper and wounding another. His subsequent disappearance into the rugged Pocono Mountains sparked a 1,000-officer search. The operation cost $11.9 million and ended only when U.S. Marshals captured the fugitive at an abandoned airfield nearly seven weeks later.
Eric Frein, a former Eagle Scout and chemistry student, was identified as the primary suspect after his abandoned Jeep was discovered in a swamp near the crime scene. Inside, investigators found his Social Security card and ammunition casings matching the .308-caliber rifle used in the attack. Frein, who had previously founded a military simulation group called the Eastern Wolves, was described by police as a self-taught survivalist. His background in recreational military simulations and his meticulous attention to detail—such as his preference for specific uniforms—reportedly aided his ability to evade law enforcement.
The manhunt involved a massive coalition of local, state, and federal agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Marshals. Despite the use of tracking dogs and armored vehicles, Frein successfully navigated the difficult terrain by utilizing water crossings to mask his scent. During the 48-day search, police reported several sightings, though the rugged landscape consistently allowed him to slip away. Lt. Colonel George Bivens noted the difficulty of the pursuit, suggesting that Frein appeared to be treating the situation as a game, drawing comparisons to fictional survivalist characters.
Following his capture on October 30, 2014, at the Birchwood-Pocono Airpark, Frein was taken into custody without further incident. His trial, which required an imported jury from Chester County due to extensive local publicity, concluded in 2017. He was found guilty on all charges, including the murder of Corporal Bryon K. Dickson II, and was sentenced to death. The case remains a notable example of the challenges inherent in tracking individuals with specialized survival training, highlighting the significant resources required to secure a suspect in dense, unforgiving wilderness environments.
