How a 45-minute songwriting session created one of the best-selling singles in history
In short: Bryan Adams and Robert John Mutt Lange wrote the power ballad (Everything I Do) I Do It for You in under an hour. It became a global phenomenon, spending 16 consecutive weeks at number one in the UK and selling over 15 million copies worldwide since its 1991 release.
Conceived in a London studio in 1990, the song was based on Michael Kamen's love theme from the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Adams, Kamen, and Lange crafted the track in just 45 minutes. When it was released in June 1991, it shattered records, most notably in the United Kingdom, where it held the top spot on the singles chart for 16 weeks. This performance surpassed the previous record of 11 weeks held by Slim Whitman's 1955 hit, Rose Marie.
The song's dominance extended far beyond the UK. It topped the Europe-wide sales chart for 18 continuous weeks and reached number one in at least 19 countries. In the United States, it spent seven weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and set an all-time record on the sales-only chart with 17 consecutive weeks at number one. Despite its massive commercial success, the song faced stiff competition for critical accolades, losing the Academy Award for Best Original Song to Beauty and the Beast.
The legacy of the track is cemented by its enduring popularity and widespread influence. It has been covered by hundreds of artists, including Brandy and the Irish band Fatima Mansions, and remains a staple of rock countdowns decades later. The original music video, filmed in the Quantock Hills of Somerset, England, features Adams performing in a forest near a derelict silk mill, intercut with footage from the film that inspired its creation. It remains a definitive example of the power ballad era.
