In short: Eyal Zamir did not follow the typical path to military elite status. While his peers aimed for commando units, he was drawn to the power of armored warfare. Today, he leads the Israel Defense Forces, navigating high-stakes operations and intense political debates over military necessity and national law.

Born in Eilat in 1966, Eyal Zamir’s career was shaped by an early fascination with the Armored Corps. After reading about the pivotal role tanks played during the Yom Kippur War, he entered the Military Command Boarding School in Tel Aviv in 1980. He joined the IDF in 1984, training as a combat soldier and tank commander within the 500th and 460th Brigades.

Zamir’s ascent through the military hierarchy included commanding the 7th Armored Brigade and the 36th Division, as well as serving as Military Secretary to the Prime Minister from 2012 to 2015. His leadership has been defined by significant military campaigns, including the 2025 offensive in Gaza, codenamed "Gideon's Chariots," and the 12-day June 2025 Operation Rising Lion, which targeted Iranian nuclear facilities.

His tenure as Chief of Staff, which began on 5 March 2025, has been marked by profound domestic and international friction. He has publicly challenged political decisions, such as the 2026 Torah Study law, arguing that mass exemptions from military service were inconsistent with the IDF's needs. In 2025, Turkey's Public Prosecutor indicted him globally for genocide and crimes against humanity regarding the Gaza war, a move Israel dismissed.

Zamir's strategic influence extends to major international military actions, such as the 2026 joint Israeli-U.S. Operation Roaring Lion. Amidst these complexities, his leadership was recognized by The Jerusalem Post in 2025, when he was ranked number four on their list of the 50 Most Influential Jews.
