The 1492 decree that ended a millennium of Jewish life in Spain
In short: After nearly 800 years of Muslim rule, the conquest of Granada was followed by a different kind of conquest. In 1492, a single royal order forced a choice upon Spain's Jewish population: abandon their faith, convert to Catholicism, or face permanent exile.
The Alhambra Decree, issued on March 31, 1492, by the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, mandated the expulsion of all unconverted Jews. This move followed the recent fall of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada and was driven by a desire for religious uniformity. The monarchs, urged by Grand Inquisitor Tomás de Torquemada, sought to eliminate any influence that might lead 'conversos'—Jewish converts to Christianity—to return to their ancestral faith.
The path to expulsion was paved by decades of escalating tension. Since 1478, the Spanish Inquisition had been actively hunting heretics, using methods ranging from legal discrimination to torture and execution. Previous waves of violence, including the massacres of 1391, had already forced many into Catholicism. By the time the decree was signed, the Jewish community was already being thinned by centuries of pogroms and 'purity-of-blood' laws.
The immediate aftermath was devastating. Jews were given until the end of July 1492 to depart, leading to a frantic sale of lands and assets at much lower prices than their true value. While older historical estimates suggested hundreds of thousands fled, modern historians suggest around 40,000 people emigrated, though some figures reach as high as 200,000. Many refugees sought safety in the Ottoman Empire or Italy, while others fled to Portugal, only to face forced conversion there five years later.
The legacy of this era persists. The mass exodus established a vast Sephardic diaspora across the Mediterranean and Europe. Centuries later, in 2015, the Spanish government passed a law allowing descendants of these expelled Jews to reclaim Spanish nationality, an effort to compensate for the 'shameful events' of the country's history.
