How a Singaporean politician challenged the boundaries between faith, policy, and public life
In short: Faisal Manap made history as the first Malay-ethnic opposition Member of Parliament in post-independence Singapore. Throughout his career, he navigated the complex intersection of religion and secular politics, persistently advocating for the tudung in uniformed services while engaging in high-profile debates regarding the role of faith in governance.
Born in 1975, Faisal Manap transitioned from a career in civil engineering and marriage counseling to become a prominent figure in the Workers' Party. His political breakthrough occurred in the 2011 general election, when he helped his team capture the Aljunied Group Representation Constituency, a landmark victory that marked the first time an opposition team had won a GRC since the system's inception in 1988. He served as an MP for the Kaki Bukit division for three terms, eventually rising to become the party's vice-chairperson in 2016.
Faisal frequently challenged the established norms of Singaporean governance, particularly regarding the separation of religion and politics. He openly argued that the intertwining of faith and policy formulation was inevitable, a stance that often put him at odds with government ministers. His persistent advocacy for allowing Muslim nurses to wear the tudung in public healthcare—a policy change eventually adopted in 2021—was initially met with sharp rebukes from officials who warned that such public discourse could disrupt racial and religious harmony.
His career was also marked by significant controversy and personal challenges. He faced scrutiny from the Committee of Privileges following the resignation of fellow MP Raeesah Khan, though he was ultimately not charged with criminal offenses. Additionally, his personal opposition to the repeal of Section 377A of the Penal Code and his support for the Wear White campaign highlighted his commitment to his religious conscience. Following his defeat in the 2025 election and a serious cardiac health scare in 2023, Faisal transitioned into a new career as a property agent in 2026.
The legacy of his parliamentary tenure remains a subject of discussion, particularly concerning the limits of political expression in a multiracial society. While his supporters saw him as a voice for minority interests and religious conviction, his critics viewed his methods as potentially divisive. His journey from a technical officer to a central figure in the opposition reflects the evolving landscape of Singaporean politics and the ongoing debate over how faith should influence the legislative process.
