Why does a teenage girl’s romance trigger an ancient war between fallen angels?
In short: Lucinda Price is sent to a reform school after a mysterious fire kills her boyfriend. There, she discovers that her new classmates are not merely troubled teens, but fallen angels embroiled in a celestial conflict. Her attraction to one angel, Daniel, reveals a cursed, millennia-old cycle of love and death.
In Lauren Kate’s 2009 novel Fallen, Lucinda 'Luce' Price arrives at the Sword & Cross Reform School in Georgia under a cloud of suspicion. She is blamed for a fire that killed a boy named Trevor, a tragedy that haunts her as she navigates a strange new environment. At the school, she meets Daniel Grigori, a boy she feels she has known for lifetimes, and Cameron Briel, who competes for her affection. As the story unfolds, Luce learns that these boys are fallen angels, heavenly beings who chose sides in a primordial conflict between God and Satan.
The central tension of the series lies in a curse that has bound Luce and Daniel since the beginning of time. Daniel, who has yet to choose a side in the celestial war, is cursed to love Luce; whenever they become too close, she spontaneously combusts and dies, only to reincarnate. This cycle has repeated for thousands of years, with Daniel desperately trying to keep his distance to protect her. In this current lifetime, however, a crucial detail changes: because Luce was never baptized, she is no longer able to reincarnate, meaning this life is her last chance to break the cycle.
The stakes are further raised by the intervention of Miss Sophia, the school librarian and a member of the Zhsmaelim, a radical sect of 24 Elders. Sophia believes that by killing Luce, she can force Daniel to finally choose a side, thereby tipping the balance of the cosmic war. The novel explores themes of reincarnation, religion, and the weight of history, as Luce discovers that her ability to see 'Shadows'—paranormal smudges she has witnessed since childhood—are actually 'announcers' of the past. As the battle between angels intensifies, Luce must navigate a world where her very existence is the catalyst for a war that has spanned eternity.
