What started as a joke pitch became a legendary television destination for human desire.
In short: Fantasy Island began when producer Aaron Spelling, frustrated by rejected pitches, jokingly asked an executive if they wanted a show about an island where people realize their fantasies. The resulting series became a cultural staple, blending morality plays with the supernatural, all centered on the enigmatic Mr. Roarke.
The series, which aired on ABC from 1977 to 1984, centered on Mr. Roarke, an enigmatic host played by Ricardo Montalbán. Guests traveled to his mysterious island to live out personal fantasies for a price. While the premise was often lighthearted, the show frequently took dark or supernatural turns, featuring ghosts, genies, and even the Devil himself. Roarke, whose own origins remained shrouded in mystery, acted as a moral guide, often teaching guests life lessons that exposed their own flaws.
Behind the scenes, the show was a masterclass in production efficiency and creative adaptation. The iconic bell tower scenes were filmed at the Queen Anne Cottage in Arcadia, California, while the island's lush coastline was captured in Kauai, Hawaii. The show’s signature catchphrase, "De plane! De plane!", was delivered by Hervé Villechaize, who played Roarke's assistant, Tattoo, until his departure before the final season. The production was a business in its own right, with guests paying a substantial fee—or, in some cases, winning a rigged contest—to participate in these life-altering experiences.
The character of Mr. Roarke remained a subject of intense speculation. Though the show never explicitly defined his nature, Montalbán later revealed he viewed Roarke as a fallen angel serving his Purgatory. This depth helped the show transcend its simple premise, allowing it to explore themes of mortality, morality, and the consequences of human desire. Even after the original series ended, the concept persisted through revivals, a 2020 horror prequel, and a 2021 sequel series, proving the enduring appeal of a place where one's deepest wishes can finally come true.
