In short: Farid Basharat’s journey to the pinnacle of mixed martial arts is defined by a literal and figurative rivalry. Born in Afghanistan and arriving in England as a refugee, he spent his childhood in a perpetual competition with his older brother, eventually turning that sibling bond into a professional fighting legacy.

Farid Basharat represents a modern arc of the refugee experience, moving from a displaced childhood in Afghanistan to becoming a top-ranked athlete in the United States. After arriving in England with his mother, Basharat and his brother Javid—who also became a professional fighter in the PFL—rejoined their father. This family dynamic established a foundation of constant competition between the two brothers that has persisted since their early childhood. The siblings eventually established separate professional paths in different major organizations. Javid currently competes for the PFL while Farid rose through the UFC ranks. This sibling rivalry served as a primary catalyst for their athletic development.

Basharat's professional ascent began on the English regional scene. He maintained an undefeated record through his initial stretch, beginning with a unanimous decision win over Camilo Petkoff in April 2018. His progression was marked by a diverse array of victories, including submissions, knockouts, and decisions, before he caught the attention of the UFC. His debut victory occurred at FightStar Championship 14. Following that first win, he secured seven consecutive victories. These early successes showcased his ability to finish opponents through various methods.

He secured his contract after a unanimous decision win against Allan Begosso at Dana White's Contender Series Season 6. Since entering the UFC in March 2023, Basharat has navigated a high-pressure schedule, including a notable weight-class shift in October 2024. Originally scheduled as a bantamweight bout, he fought Victor Hugo as a featherweight after Hugo missed weight by 10 pounds. As of July 11, 2026, Basharat holds the #9 spot in the Meta UFC bantamweight rankings, a testament to his consistency in securing decisions and finishes against international competition. His first appearance in the octagon took place in Las Vegas during UFC 285. He later defeated Kleydson Rodrigues via an arm-triangle choke in just one round. Most recently, he overcame John Garza in a bout originally intended for a different date.
