Fargo Year Four: A sprawling crime epic set in 1950s Kansas City
In short: The fourth installment of the acclaimed anthology series shifts focus to 1950s Kansas City, exploring the violent rivalry between two criminal syndicates. Featuring the show's largest ensemble cast to date, this ambitious season examines themes of immigration and culture, though it faced criticism for its uneven pacing and narrative density.
Set between November 1950 and early 1951, Fargo: Year Four chronicles the power struggle for the Kansas City criminal underground. The conflict pits an African American syndicate, led by Loy Cannon, against the Italian Fadda family. Cannon, a businessman, is simultaneously attempting to pioneer the concept of the credit card. The Fadda family is led by Josto Fadda, whose leadership is challenged by the arrival of his violent brother, Gaetano, from Italy.
Showrunner Noah Hawley assembled a massive cast for this season, including Chris Rock, Jessie Buckley, and Jason Schwartzman. Production, which began in Chicago in October 2019, faced significant hurdles due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally slated for an April 19, 2020 premiere, the series was delayed and production was suspended in March 2020, with only eight of the eleven episodes completed at that time. Filming eventually resumed in August 2020, concluding on September 8, 2020.
While critics praised the season's production values and performances, the reception was more tempered than previous installments. On Rotten Tomatoes, the season holds an 84% approval rating, while Metacritic reports a weighted average score of 68 out of 100. Critics noted that while the season remains engaging, it struggles with inconsistent pacing and an overabundance of characters. Some reviewers, such as Matt Zoller Seitz, argued that the show failed to fully connect its premise of children being swapped between gangs to its broader themes of immigration and culture, occasionally relying on excessive monologues to convey its subtext.
