How a natural lagoon saved a city from a devastating tsunami
In short: In 1755, a massive earthquake and tsunami leveled much of the Portuguese coast. While neighboring towns like Lagos were destroyed, Faro remained largely intact. The secret to its survival lay in the unique geography of the Ria Formosa lagoon, a protective barrier that changed the region's history forever.
The 1755 Lisbon earthquake was a catastrophe for the Algarve, causing widespread destruction to churches, convents, and administrative buildings. However, Faro escaped the worst of the subsequent tsunami. The sandy banks of the Ria Formosa lagoon acted as a natural buffer, shielding the city from the ocean's destructive surge. This geographic advantage allowed Faro to step into a new role; as the nearby capital of Lagos was devastated, Faro became the administrative seat of the Algarve in 1756.
The city's history is a complex tapestry of shifting powers. Originally known as Ossonoba during the Phoenician and Roman eras, it later became a significant Moorish port called Santa Maria Ibn Harun. Following the Portuguese conquest in 1249 by King Afonso III, the town prospered through salt exploitation and maritime trade. This era also saw a vibrant Jewish community, which included Samuel Gacon, who printed the first book in Portugal in 1487. This prosperity was later interrupted by the 1496 edict of King Manuel I, which expelled non-converts.
Today, Faro is a modern hub, yet it remains deeply connected to its ecological roots. The Ria Formosa, a protected nature reserve established in 1987, is a vital ecosystem of marshes and barrier islands. It serves as a winter sanctuary for migratory birds like flamingos and avocets. While the city continues to grow—with the municipality reaching over 70,000 inhabitants by 2024—it maintains its unique character, balancing its role as a regional capital with its status as a gateway to one of Portugal's natural wonders.
