The man nicknamed 'Lazy' who holds the key to Gordon Ryan's rivalry
In short: In the high-stakes world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, few names carry as much weight as Felipe Pena. Known by the nickname 'Preguiça'—meaning Lazy—the Brazilian practitioner has become a central figure in one of the sport's most intense rivalries, holding unique distinctions that even the most dominant champions cannot claim.
Felipe Pena, a three-time ADCC world champion, has carved out a legendary career through sheer technical skill and resilience. His nickname, 'Preguiça' (Lazy), stands in stark contrast to his competitive intensity. Pena has secured numerous medals across the IBJJF and ADCC world championships, proving his dominance across multiple weight classes, including the over 99 kg division.
His most significant legacy involves his rivalry with Gordon Ryan. Pena holds the unique distinction of being the only person to have defeated Ryan twice in competition, and the only individual to have submitted him during a black belt match. Their storied history began in 2016 at Studio 540, where Pena secured a victory via rear-naked choke, followed by a points victory in the 2017 ADCC absolute division final.
The rivalry has been defined by high-stakes bets and intense drama. For a potential third match, Ryan offered $100,000 against Pena's $10,000. This bout, originally set for August 7, 2022, was nearly derailed when Pena attempted to withdraw following the death of his friend, Leandro Lo. After negotiations regarding time limits and pay, the match proceeded, though Pena eventually forfeited in the 44th minute. By their fourth encounter on August 17, 2024, the series stood at two wins apiece.
Beyond his grappling prowess, Pena has expressed ambitions to transition into Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to pursue championship titles in that discipline. However, his career has not been without controversy; he has twice tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, specifically in 2015 and 2022, resulting in the loss of IBJJF world championship titles won in the preceding years.
