In short: In the tactical world of Fire Emblem Engage, victory relies on more than just steel. By using twelve magical Emblem Rings, warriors can summon phantasmal copies of legendary heroes to merge with, gaining immense power and new skills to combat the resurrected undead forces of the Fell Dragon Sombron.

Following a millennium of sleep, the dragon Alear emerges in the 2023 Nintendo Switch title Fire Emblem Engage. The narrative follows Alear's journey across the continent of Elyos to prevent the Fell Dragon Sombron from seizing twelve magical rings. These rings are capable of performing a feat of immense magic if all twelve are gathered by a single individual.

The gameplay is defined by its unique 'Engage' mechanic. By equipping Emblem Rings, characters can transform into a fused state with a hero from a previous installment for a limited number of turns. This process grants access to specific weapon proficiencies, passive skills, and powerful single-use attacks. To maintain this power, units must refill an 'Engage meter' through regular combat.

Five distinct areas comprise the continent of Elyos: Solm, Elusia, Brodia, Firene, and Lythos. While most citizens revere the Divine Dragon, the Kingdom of Elusia worships the Fell Dragon. The conflict is complicated by the Corrupted—undead forces serving Sombron—and the political skirmishes between the kingdoms of Brodia and Elusia. Despite receiving positive reviews for its strategic depth and visuals, some critics found the story and worldbuilding to be less memorable than its predecessor, Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

The game also features social simulation elements in the Somniel, a floating refuge. Here, players can engage in activities like fishing, working out, or sharing meals in a cafe to strengthen the bonds between their units and their Emblems.
