In short: For decades, the ultimate football question remained unanswered: which continent truly reigns supreme? The Finalissima aims to settle this by pitting the champions of the UEFA European Championship against the winners of the Copa América in a single, high-stakes showdown.

The Finalissima serves as the national team equivalent to the club-level Intercontinental Cup. Originally launched in 1985 as the European/South American Nations Cup—and later known as the Artemio Franchi Cup—the tournament was designed to crown a definitive intercontinental champion. The trophy was named in honor of Artemio Franchi, a former UEFA president who died in a road accident in 1983.

The competition's history is marked by inconsistency. After its inaugural 1985 match in Paris, where France defeated Uruguay 2–0, the fixture vanished. A scheduled 1989 meeting between the Netherlands and Uruguay failed to occur because the teams could not agree on a date. The tournament resurfaced briefly in 1993 in Mar del Plata, where Argentina secured a 5–4 penalty shootout victory over Denmark after a 1–1 draw.

After a long hiatus, UEFA and CONMEBOL signed a renewed memorandum of understanding in 2020, reviving the competition in 2022. This new era saw Argentina defeat Italy 3–0 at Wembley Stadium. While the tournament was intended to be a recurring event, political instability has disrupted its momentum. A planned 2026 match in Lusail Stadium, Qatar, between Spain and Argentina was ultimately cancelled by UEFA due to the regional political situation, specifically the 2026 Iran war.

The modern format is a single 90-minute match. If the score remains tied after full time, the winner is decided by a penalty shoot-out, with no extra time played.
