The expansion team that rewrote the NHL success playbook
In short: Most professional sports expansion teams struggle for years to find their footing. The Vegas Golden Knights did the opposite. Since their 2017 debut, they have become one of the most successful expansion franchises in North American history, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in their very first season.
The Golden Knights' journey began with a massive show of public interest. In February 2015, the NHL allowed owner Bill Foley to conduct a season ticket drive to gauge demand. The response was immediate: 5,000 deposits were placed in just the first day and a half, and the goal of 10,000 deposits was reached by April 2015. This enthusiasm was driven by the potential for a new indoor arena on the Strip. The league eventually approved the bid following a successful period of gauging market interest.
After receiving a unanimous vote from league owners on June 22, 2016, the franchise officially began operations. Their inaugural 2017–18 season was historic. They became the first team in NHL history to win eight of their first nine games and the first to sweep their first playoff series. They joined the Toronto Arenas (1918) and the St. Louis Blues (1968) as the only other clubs to reach the Stanley Cup Final during their debut year. Louis Blues in 1968. The roster featured notable players like goaltender Marc-André Fleury and winger James Neal. Their early success included clinching the Pacific Division title during that first year.
Their quick rise persisted through their sixth year. In 2023, the Golden Knights won their first Stanley Cup championship, making them the fastest expansion team to capture the title in NHL history. Having made the Stanley Cup playoffs in eight of their initial nine seasons, they have established themselves as a Pacific Division powerhouse. The team's rapid ascent was bolstered by key acquisitions like Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone. This momentum has helped them maintain a consistent presence in the postseason.
