In short: Born from the veterans of Final Fantasy XV, Luminous Productions aimed to showcase next-generation power through fluid traversal and ray tracing. Yet, despite its high-concept magic and cinematic scope, the 2023 release faced a turbulent journey from development to the critics' pens.

Originally known as Project Athia, Forspoken was engineered to push the technical boundaries of the PlayStation 5. The developers utilized procedural generation to build its expansive open world and implemented ray tracing to enhance lighting effects. The project even sought the involvement of renowned fantasy author Brandon Sanderson, though he declined due to other commitments. The writing team featured industry veterans Gary Whitta and Amy Hennig, while the musical score was provided by Bear McCrements and Garry Schyman. To ensure authentic characterization, the developers even consulted with Black Girl Gamers.

The narrative follows Frey, a young woman from New York City transported to the magical realm of Athia. While the game's traversal system received praise for being enthralling, the critical reception was notably mixed. Reviewers from outlets like Destructoid and Polygon pointed to a slow start, noting that the game's combat and ability unlocks often felt delayed or mediocre compared to the fluid movement. The gameplay mechanics allow players to upgrade Frey's necklaces and cloaks to boost stats, and even applying nail polish can unlock special abilities. Players may also face breakstorms, which are intense waves of demonic attacks that culminate in a boss fight.

The game's commercial performance and studio structure also faced significant shifts. Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda described early sales as "lacklustre" during a February 2023 briefing, noting a risk to earnings. Shortly after the game's launch, the developer Luminous Productions was absorbed back into Square Enix as part of a strategic move to bolster the group's development studios. The game's release was marked by several delays, moving from an initial May 2022 target to a January 24, 2023 launch. Despite its high-profile debut, the title's physical sales varied globally, reaching number four in the UK and number three in Japan's first week.
