In short: When Hironobu Sakaguchi sought to evolve the role-playing genre, he faced a creative pivot. Originally conceived as a science fiction tale, Nintendo's intervention shifted the vision toward fantasy, resulting in a unique action-RPG that explores the consequences of cosmic interference.

Developed by Mistwalker and AQ Interactive, The Last Story was directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series. Following mixed audience responses to his previous titles, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, Sakaguchi aimed to create a distinct experience. The project's development spanned between three and four years, and while it was initially intended for the Japanese market, it eventually saw a global release. The title achieved commercial success and earned positive reviews, although critics held differing views regarding the graphics and plot. Despite initial uncertainty regarding its North American launch, a fan campaign known as Operation Rainfall helped generate significant interest.

The narrative is set on the island fortress of Lazulis, a land facing slow decay caused by an unknown force. The plot follows Zael, a mercenary aspiring to knighthood, who receives the mystical 'Mark of the Outsider.' This mark becomes central to the conflict between humans and the beast-like Gurak, eventually revealing that the 'Outsider' is actually an extraterrestrial being. The protagonist Zael navigates a world where the island of Lazulis serves as the primary setting. His journey involves working alongside a mercenary squad to complete various missions.

The story's core mystery involves the Outsider's impact on the planet. Centuries ago, a sorceress summoned the being to end conflict, but the entity began draining the world's life. To slow this decay, the power was split into two halves—one held by humans and one by the Gurak. The game's resolution hinges on the tension between these factions and the decision to reunite the energy, which ultimately leads to the Outsider leaving the planet and allowing for human-Gurak coexistence. The resolution of the conflict depends on the player's ability to manage the tension between the warring factions. Ultimately, the characters' actions facilitate a new era of peace and shared technology between the two races.
