How an undrafted point guard redefined the limits of professional basketball
In short: Fred VanVleet defied the odds of the NBA draft to become a champion and a record-breaking playmaker. From his humble beginnings in Rockford, Illinois, to leading the Houston Rockets, he has mastered the art of the defensive deflection, proving that height is no barrier to elite-level statistical dominance.
Born in 1994, Fred VanVleet rose from an undrafted prospect to a cornerstone of the Toronto Raptors' 2019 championship run. His path was unconventional; after being overlooked by major Chicago-area programs, he chose Wichita State, where he became the school's career assists leader. Despite his collegiate success, he went undrafted in 2016, eventually signing with Toronto and proving his value through grit and tactical intelligence.
VanVleet’s career is defined by his ability to shatter expectations. In 2021, he set a franchise record with 54 points in a single game, the highest total ever recorded by an undrafted NBA player. He also became one of the few undrafted players in the modern era to earn an All-Star selection. His playmaking reached a peak in 2023 when he recorded 20 assists in a single game, making him the only player to hold the single-game records for both points and assists for a single franchise.
Perhaps his most surprising contribution is his defensive prowess. Standing at roughly six feet tall, VanVleet has developed a unique technique for blocking shots by deflecting the ball while opponents are still in their shooting motion. This skill allowed him to set an NBA record for the most blocks in a single season by a player of his height. Now with the Houston Rockets, he continues to challenge traditional basketball archetypes, proving that specialized defensive instincts can overcome significant physical disadvantages.
