From military brat to Netflix star: the rapid rise of actor Freddy Carter
In short: Born into a transient military family and inspired by a single stage performance at age sixteen, Freddy Carter has navigated a diverse career across television, film, and theatre. From his debut in a DC blockbuster to leading roles in fantasy adaptations, his trajectory reflects a modern, multi-hyphenate approach to acting.
Born in Plymouth on 27 January 1993, Freddy Carter spent his formative years moving between locations like Cyprus and Virginia Beach due to his father's military service. His path toward the arts crystallized at age sixteen after watching Mark Rylance in a London production of Jerusalem. This experience led him to the Oxford School of Drama, where he graduated in 2015 before immediately joining the Rose Theatre Kingston’s production of The Wars of the Roses.
Carter’s screen career gained momentum with his 2017 debut in Wonder Woman and his first major role as Peter Hawthorne in the series Free Rein. His versatility became apparent as he balanced stage work, such as the 2018 production of Agnes Colander, with television projects like the miniseries 15 Days and the DC series Pennyworth. In 2019, he expanded his creative footprint by writing and directing his own short film, No. 89.
His most prominent role arrived in 2021 when he was cast as Kaz Brekker in Netflix’s Shadow and Bone. The adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s work earned him critical recognition, particularly for his chemistry with co-star Amita Suman. Despite the series' cancellation after two seasons, Carter continued his momentum, appearing in Masters of the Air in 2024 and starring as Michael Afton in the 2025 film Five Nights at Freddy's 2. Beyond his professional life, Carter, who married actress Caroline Ford in 2022, maintains a dedicated interest in photography while based in London.
