How a San Bernardino cover band pioneered the global rise of corridos tumbados
In short: Formed in 2015 by a group of friends working warehouse and construction jobs, Fuerza Regida evolved from a local cover band into a genre-bending powerhouse. By blending traditional regional Mexican sounds with EDM, trap, and house, they have redefined the boundaries of the scene and reached the Billboard 200.
Fuerza Regida began in San Bernardino, California, when lead vocalist Jesús Ortíz Paz met guitarists Samuel Jáimez and Khrystian Ramos, later adding tuba player José "Pelón" García. Initially performing as a cover band, they gained local recognition in the Inland Empire before their 2018 single "Radicamos en South Central" went viral. This success led to a contract with Lumbre Music and a partnership with the Rancho Humilde label, launching a career that would eventually see them become pioneers of the corridos tumbados style.
The band's musical evolution is marked by a willingness to experiment with diverse genres. While their roots lie in norteño and sierreño music, they have increasingly incorporated urban influences. Their 2023 album Pa Las Baby's y Belikeada introduced "Jersey corridos," a fusion of corridos and house music created with Marshmello. This trajectory continued with the 2024 album Pero No Te Enamores, which drew inspiration from Drake's Honestly, Nevermind to explore electronic dance and house tracks. By 2025, their ninth studio album, 111xpantia, returned to regional Mexican foundations while incorporating synthesizers and banjos, shifting lyrical themes from cartel culture toward partying and love.
Beyond their commercial success—which includes multiple Billboard Latin Music Awards and a historic chart performance for 111xpantia—the band maintains a strong connection to their community. In 2023, the Los Angeles City Council declared February 28 as Fuerza Regida Day to honor their support for street vending legalization. They have also engaged in philanthropy, providing shelter for wildfire victims and donating proceeds from merchandise sales to the Immigrant Defenders Law Center. In 2026, they were presented with the keys to San Bernardino, where they are developing a youth-focused community center for the performing arts.
