In short: Founded by a former prime minister to challenge the status quo, the Future Party sought to restore a parliamentary system in Turkey. After years of navigating complex alliances and shifting political tides, the party recently shuttered its operations, citing a desire to escape an increasingly polluted national political atmosphere.

The Future Party, or Gelecek Partisi, emerged on December 12, 2019, under the leadership of Ahmet Davutoğlu. Davutoğlu, who previously served as Turkey's prime minister from 2014 to 2016, had been a prominent figure within the Justice and Development Party (AKP). His departure from the AKP followed a public rift with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding the transition from a parliamentary to a presidential system of government. By launching his own movement, Davutoğlu aimed to provide a conservative alternative that advocated for constitutional reform, minority language education, and the protection of Kurdish rights.

Throughout its existence, the party struggled to find a stable footing within the fragmented opposition landscape. It attempted various strategic maneuvers, including a failed merger proposal with the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA) in 2023, where disagreements over co-leadership structures prevented a unified front. Later that year, the party opted to join forces with the Felicity Party, allowing its deputies to form a joint parliamentary group. Despite these efforts to influence policy, the party's electoral impact remained limited, as evidenced by its performance in local and general elections.

The end of the Future Party came on July 29, 2026, when Davutoğlu announced the organization would cease all political activities the following month. He characterized the decision as a necessary step to distance the movement from what he described as a toxic political climate. At the time of its dissolution, the party held three seats in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, though these members were operating under the banner of Yeni Yol. The closure marks the conclusion of a high-profile attempt by former AKP insiders to reshape Turkish governance from the outside.
