A film title change six hours before release saved this Indian action comedy
In short: When a community protested the use of a revered saint's name for a gangster character, the filmmakers of the Telugu action movie Gaddalakonda Ganesh faced a crisis. Just six hours before the scheduled premiere, they rebranded the entire project to avoid further controversy and ensure its theatrical debut.
The film, originally titled Valmiki, is a 2019 Telugu-language remake of the 2014 Tamil cult classic Jigarthanda. Director Harish Shankar adapted the story to local sensibilities, specifically tailoring the lead role for actor Varun Tej. While the original film focused on a filmmaker's journey, Shankar shifted the perspective to emphasize the gangster's narrative, adding a backstory to justify the character's ruthless nature. This creative choice, combined with a new female lead played by Pooja Hegde, was intended to help audiences accept Tej in a villainous role.
The controversy stemmed from the film's initial title, Valmiki, named after the legendary author of the Ramayana. The Boya community, who revere the saint, filed petitions in both the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh High Courts, arguing that associating a holy name with a criminal character was deeply offensive. The backlash was severe enough to stall screenings in the Anantapur and Kurnool districts. To salvage the release, the production team made the eleventh-hour decision to rename the film Gaddalakonda Ganesh, after the protagonist's own name.
Despite the chaotic lead-up, the film proved to be a commercial success, grossing ₹45 crore during its theatrical run. Critics praised the performance of Varun Tej, who adopted a distinct Telangana dialect and a rugged, bearded look for the part. The film's success extended beyond the cinema, with its television premiere on Star Maa registering a rating of 12.75. It was later dubbed into Tamil and Malayalam, cementing its status as a significant, albeit contentious, entry in modern Telugu cinema.
