From a family of eleven to the top five in the UFC
In short: Born into a large, struggling household in Brasília, Gabriel Bonfim has navigated a path of extreme resilience. After transitioning from a decorated boxing career to mixed martial arts, he has rapidly ascended the welterweight rankings through a series of high-stakes victories.
Gabriel de Souza Bonfim's rise is marked by significant personal and professional hurdles. Growing up in Brasília as one of eleven children, Bonfim faced a childhood shaped by family instability after his father struggled with alcoholism and eventually abandoned the family. This forced his older siblings, including professional MMA fighter Ismael Bonfim, to seek employment to support the household.
His athletic foundation was built in both boxing and regional Brazilian MMA promotions between 2014 and 2019. Before reaching the international stage, he maintained an undefeated 10–0 record in MMA and a 5–0 record in professional boxing. His breakthrough came in the Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA), where he secured the Welterweight Championship by defeating Eduardo Garvon via an arm-triangle choke in the first round of a March 2022 bout.
Bonfim's ascent through the UFC has been characterized by frequent opponent changes and clinical finishes. After earning a UFC contract via a Von Flue choke at Dana White's Contender Series 53 in September 2022, he has become a fixture in the welterweight division. While he suffered a technical knockout loss to Nicolas Dalby in November 2023—a bout that earned him a Fight of the Night bonus—he has continued to climb the Meta UFC rankings.
As of August 11, 2026, Bonfim holds the #5 spot in the welterweight rankings. His recent campaign includes notable victories, such as a unanimous decision over former champion Belal Muhammad in June 2026 and a second Performance of the Night award following a second-round TKO of Randy Brown in November 2025. He is currently scheduled to face Sean Brady in the main event of UFC Fight Night 293 in November 2026.
