From a Brazilian fighting tradition to the pinnacle of the UFC featherweight division
In short: Born into a family where fighting was a tradition, Diego Lopes transformed a childhood in Manaus into a global mixed martial arts career. After relocating to Mexico to teach jiu-jitness, he rose through the ranks to become a top-ranked contender in the world's premier fighting organization.
Diego Lopes da Silva’s journey began in Manaus, Brazil, where he started competing at just seven years old. By age 16, he had earned his purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a discipline rooted in his family's fighting heritage. His professional MMA career launched in September 2012, and a pivotal opportunity at age 19 saw him move to Mexico. There, he served as a coach while honing his own combat skills, eventually establishing the 'Brazilian Warriors' non-profit academy in Puebla to support underprivileged children.
Lopes built significant momentum in the Mexican promotion LUX Fight League, where he captured the featherweight title by defeating Marco Beltrán via kneebar in November 2019. After a single title defense against Masio Fullen in March 2021, he transitioned to the global stage. Although a loss at Dana White's Contender Series 37 in August 2021 initially left him without a contract, he was eventually signed to the UFC.
Since his UFC debut in May 2023, Lopes has become known for high-intensity performances, earning multiple 'Fight of the Night' and 'Performance of the Night' honors. His career has been marked by both brilliance and controversy; notably, at UFC 300 in April 2024, a celebration involving jumping the cage led to a fine from the NAC, though UFC CEO Dana White reportedly covered the cost. As of July 2026, Lopes remains a top-ranked force in the featherweight division, with a scheduled challenge for the 'BMF Championship' against Charles Oliveira set for late 2026.
