How Gabriela Dabrowski became the first Canadian to claim a major tennis title
In short: Gabriela Dabrowski transformed from a promising junior prodigy into a global tennis powerhouse. By mastering the specialized art of doubles, she broke historic barriers for Canada, securing multiple Grand Slam trophies and reaching the world number two ranking. Her journey reveals the relentless evolution required to dominate at the professional level.
Born in 1992, Gabriela Dabrowski began her competitive journey early, winning the prestigious 14-and-under Les Petits As tournament in 2006. After a successful junior career that saw her finish 2010 ranked fifth globally, she transitioned to the professional circuit. While she initially competed in singles, winning a $50k title in 2014, her trajectory shifted significantly as she focused on doubles, where her strategic partnership-building became a hallmark of her success.
Dabrowski’s breakthrough on the world stage arrived in 2017 when she won the French Open mixed-doubles title alongside Rohan Bopanna, marking the first time a Canadian woman captured a senior major trophy. She followed this with a 2018 Australian Open mixed-doubles win with Mate Pavić. Her commitment to the discipline saw her steadily climb the rankings, becoming the highest-ranked Canadian in doubles history when she reached world number five in October 2021. By July 2022, she had ascended to world number four.
Her partnership with Erin Routliffe proved transformative, culminating in a 2023 US Open victory—her first major women's doubles title. This momentum continued into 2024, when the pair secured the WTA Finals title in Riyadh, making Dabrowski the first Canadian to win the prestigious year-end event. Her career-high doubles ranking of world number two was achieved on 23 February 2026. Beyond individual accolades, she was instrumental in Canada’s historic 2023 Billie Jean King Cup victory, winning all three of her doubles matches to help secure the trophy.
Dabrowski’s career is defined by her adaptability, having successfully partnered with a diverse array of players, including Xu Yifan, Luisa Stefani, and Giuliana Olmos. Each partnership required a unique tactical approach, demonstrating the high-level communication and synchronization necessary to excel in professional doubles. Her sustained presence at the top of the sport underscores the technical depth and mental resilience required to remain competitive across more than a decade of elite-level play.
