In short: Gary Rossington wanted to be a professional baseball player until a chance encounter on the diamond led him to jam with future bandmates. That afternoon session in a carport sparked the formation of Lynyrd Skynyrd, a group Rossington would anchor as its final surviving original member for decades.

Born in Jacksonville in 1951, Gary Rossington grew up in a fatherless household, eventually finding a mentor in bandmate Ronnie Van Zant. Their musical journey began in 1964 after a baseball-related injury sidelined Bob Burns, prompting the trio to experiment with Rolling Stones covers. After cycling through names like The Noble Five and The One Percent, the group solidified as Lynyrd Skynyrd by 1969. Rossington’s signature sound was defined by his preference for Gibson Les Pauls, most notably his 1959 model named Bernice, which he dedicated to his mother.

Rossington’s career was marked by profound volatility. In 1976, he crashed his car while intoxicated, an event that inspired the band’s song That Smell and cost him a 5,000 dollar fine. The following year, he survived the 1977 plane crash in Mississippi that killed Van Zant and other band members. Despite suffering severe injuries that required steel rods in his limbs, he returned to the stage. However, the heavy pain medication used during his recovery triggered a long-term struggle with addiction.

Beyond his tenure with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rossington explored other projects, including the Rossington Collins Band and The Rossington Band, the latter formed with his wife, Dale Krantz-Rossington. He remained a constant presence in the music world despite facing significant health challenges, including a 2015 heart attack and emergency surgery in 2021. By 2019, he stood as the last original member of the band. He passed away in 2023 at age 71, leaving behind a legacy as a foundational architect of the Southern rock genre.
