In short: Founded in 1980 by David Geffen, this label survived corporate takeovers, massive layoffs, and industry shifts. From the tragic release of John Lennon's final album to the modern dominance of Olivia Rodrigo, discover how a single imprint became a cornerstone of the Universal Music Group empire.

Geffen Records began as a music subsidiary of the film company Geffen Pictures, backed by 100 percent of its startup funding from Warner Bros. Records. While David Geffen provided the name, industry historians note that Ed Rosenblatt, the label's first president, was the driving force behind its most influential era during the 1980s and 1990s. The label's early repertoire was marked by both tragedy and massive commercial success, notably releasing John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Double Fantasy, which became the label's first number-one album following Lennon's murder.

The label's history is a complex web of acquisitions. In 1990, it was sold to MCA Music Entertainment, which later became part of Universal Music Group through ownership by Panasonic and Seagram. Over the decades, Geffen transitioned from an independent entity to a 'syndicate label' within the Interscope Geffen A&M group. This evolution involved absorbing several other imprints, including MCA Records in 2003 and DreamWorks Records in the same year. These structural shifts often came with significant costs, including the layoff of over 100 employees during the 2003 reorganization.

Despite periods of dormancy, Geffen has experienced significant modern revivals. Under the leadership of executives like Jimmy Iovine and Neil Jacobson, the label has successfully integrated massive new talent. The 2020s have seen a resurgence driven by artists like Olivia Rodrigo, whose debut album, Sour, achieved the longest reign at number one on the Billboard 200 for a female artist in 2021. Today, the label continues to expand through global partnerships, such as its joint venture with HYBE to manage the distribution of various K-pop-related acts in the United States.
