Gaslit reclaims the Watergate scandal through the eyes of those on its periphery
In short: The Watergate scandal is often remembered through the lens of powerful men, but the limited series Gaslit shifts the focus. By centering on figures like Martha Mitchell and the overlooked staff caught in the crossfire, the show explores the human cost of political corruption during the tumultuous years of 1972 to 1975.
Premiering on Starz on April 24, 2022, Gaslit is a political thriller derived from the first season of the podcast Slow Burn. Rather than focusing on President Nixon, who remains a distant figure, the series highlights individuals on the scandal's edge. The primary protagonist is Martha Mitchell, the wife of Nixon's Attorney General, John Mitchell. Known as the Mouth from the South for her outspoken nature, Martha becomes a central whistleblower regarding Nixon's awareness of his staffers' illicit activities, despite her husband's desire for a silent spouse.
The narrative also examines the bizarre motivations of the burglary's coordinator, G. Gordon Liddy. Portrayed as a Nazi sympathizer and an erratic menace, Liddy presents the White House with an ambitious plan to infiltrate the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, White House Counsel John Dean finds himself increasingly unsettled by the administration's criminality, eventually realizing he is being positioned as a fall guy. His personal life is further complicated by his relationship with a woman described as a leftie, adding another layer of tension to his precarious situation.
Critical reception has been generally favorable, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting an 89% positive rating from 55 critics. The series, produced by Universal Content Productions, underwent significant casting changes during its development, including the replacement of Armie Hammer with Dan Stevens and the departure of directors Joel and Nash Edgerton. Sean Penn, who plays John Mitchell, notably mandated that all cast and crew be vaccinated against COVID-19 before he would participate in filming. Ultimately, the show aims to move beyond a simple historical summary, focusing instead on the personal stories of those who were central to the events but have largely faded from public memory.
