In short: In 2013, Arsenal fans saw a future star, a midfielder compared to Cesc Fàbregas. But behind the talent lay a complex web of shifting citizenship, international eligibility, and a life spanning Berlin, Washington D.C., and London.

Born in Berlin to Ethiopian parents, Gedion Zelalem’s early life was marked by significant movement. After his mother passed away in 2005, he moved to the suburbs of Washington, D.C., with his father in 2006. This transition shaped his early footballing development, moving from German clubs like BFC Germania 1888 and Hertha BSC to American youth teams such as Bethesda Soccer Club and Olney Rangers.

His talent was recognized globally when Arsenal scout Danny Karbassiyoon discovered him in the United States. By 2013, Zelalem was a fixture in Arsenal's academy and was even included in their 24-man squad for an Asia tour. His performances against teams like Nagoya Grampus led to intense comparisons with the legendary Cesc Fàbregas. He eventually made his senior debut for the English club in an FA Cup match against Coventry City in January 2014.

However, his international path was a legal labyrinth. Having represented Germany at the U-15, U-16, and U-17 levels, Zelalem faced a choice. After becoming a U.S. citizen in late 2014, he sought to represent the United States. Because of FIFA rules regarding naturalization, U.S. Soccer had to file for an exception to bypass a five-year waiting period, arguing his ties to the U.S. through middle school justified his eligibility. The request was approved in May 2015, allowing him to debut for the U.S. Under-20 side against Australia later that month.

Zelalem's career has since traversed various leagues, including stints with Rangers in Scotland, VVV-Venlo in the Netherlands, and several Major League Soccer clubs, including New York City FC and Sporting Kansas City.
