From diamond sorter to billionaire: the symbiotic rise of Gautam Adani
In short: After dropping out of school at sixteen, Gautam Adani transformed a family plastics unit into a global empire. His journey from Mumbai's diamond trade to the heights of Indian industry is inseparable from the political shifts of a nation, marked by both meteoric wealth and intense legal scrutiny.
Gautam Adani’s business trajectory began in 1978, when he moved to Mumbai to work as a diamond sorter for Mahendra Brothers. By 1982, he had earned his first million rupees through diamond trading. His expansion into global commodities was driven by the import of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and the 1985 relaxation of import licenses in India. In 1988, he established Adani Exports, the foundation of what is now the Adani Group.
The growth of the Adani empire is closely linked to the political landscape of Gujarat. During the tenure of Narendra Modi as Chief Minister, Adani’s business interests, such as the Mundra Port, developed in cooperation with the state government. While Adani’s expansion into ports and infrastructure has been praised as 'nation building,' it has also faced criticism. The development of the Mundra Port involved removing certain environmental and socioeconomic protections, and his acquisition of six airports in 2018 led to allegations of cronyism.
Adani’s wealth has been subject to extreme volatility and legal challenges. In 2022, he briefly became the richest person in Asia, but lost tens of billions of dollars in 2023 following allegations of fraud by the short-selling firm Hindenburg Research. While his family's net worth reached $116 billion by October 2024, new legal complexities emerged in November 2024, when a U.S. indictment alleged that Adani and executives were involved in a $250 million bribery scheme to secure Indian government contracts.
