From South London's Aylesbury Estate to Arsenal's first-team squad
In short: Reiss Nelson's journey to professional football was paved by his mother's sacrifice. Growing up in a poor family in Walworth, he navigated the intense pressure of the Arsenal academy to become a versatile winger, eventually making his mark across Europe and the Premier League.
Born in Elephant and Castle, South London, Nelson's ascent was marked by early talent and significant personal hurdles. He joined the Arsenal academy at age eight and was often playing several years above his age group. His path was supported by his mother, who worked two jobs to ensure he could attend training, a task that required significant sacrifice for their family. He attended the London Nautical School, an institution known for training young men from Inner London. During his youth, he was close friends with fellow prospect Jadon Sancho.
Nelson's career has been defined by a series of high-stakes loans and tactical shifts. Following his 2017 FA Community Shield debut for Arsenal, he joined German club TSG Hoffenheim for the 2018–19 season to gain senior minutes. A subsequent move to Feyenoord in the Netherlands saw him help the team reach the first-ever UEFA Europa Conference League final. His time in Germany included a stint under coach Julian Nagelsmann. During his Dutch spell, he wore the number 14 shirt.
Despite his technical ability—described by Feyenoord's Frank Arnesen as being rapid and difficult to defend in one-on-ones—his time at Arsenal has been punctuated by injuries and limited playing time under managers like Mikel Arteta. However, his impact was undeniable during specific moments, such as his 25-yard strike against Bournemouth in 2023, a goal described by journalist Charles Watts as a moment that turned despair into elation. He has represented England at every youth level since his 2014 under-16 debut. In 2016, he was named in the under-17 Team of the Tournament.
After nearly two decades with Arsenal, Nelson's journey has taken him through various loan spells at Fulham and Brentford, eventually leading to a return to the Eredivisie with Feyenoord in 2026. His recent career included a loan spell at Fulham during the 2024–25 season. He eventually left Arsenal by mutual consent after eighteen years at the club.
