In short: Genesis evolved from a group of Charterhouse students into a global powerhouse, selling over 100 million records. Their journey spanned decades of lineup shifts, moving from progressive roots to chart-topping pop success. Despite numerous departures, the band maintained a consistent output that defined the sound of British rock music.

Formed in 1967 by Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Anthony Phillips, and Chris Stewart, the band initially struggled to find their footing. Their debut album, From Genesis to Revelation, failed to make an impact, leading to a split from their early mentor, Jonathan King. However, after signing with Charisma Records in 1970 and stabilizing their lineup with the arrival of Phil Collins and Steve Hackett in 1971, the group began to find their signature sound. This period saw them blend pop, soul, and classical influences, eventually achieving UK commercial success with albums like Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound.

The band proved remarkably resilient, surviving the departure of frontman Peter Gabriel in 1975. Phil Collins stepped into the lead vocal role, and the group continued to thrive, releasing the successful A Trick of the Tail. Even after Steve Hackett left in 1977, the remaining trio of Banks, Rutherford, and Collins reached new heights of popularity. They secured five consecutive UK chart-topping albums starting with 1980's Duke, culminating in the massive success of Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance. Their reach was global, with over 21 million albums certified by the RIAA in the United States alone.

The band's history is marked by a unique approach to their catalog. While most of their work since 1970 has been remastered and collected in various compilations, their very first album remains an outlier. Because Jonathan King retained the copyright, From Genesis to Revelation exists outside the band's official re-release strategy. Following the departure of Collins in 1996 and the final studio album in 1997, the band officially disbanded, though they reunited for tours in 2007 and again between 2021 and 2022. Today, their legacy is preserved through extensive box sets and video collections that document their long evolution.
