In short: Known as Ringhio, or the Snarl, Gennaro Gattuso was never the most technical player on the pitch. Yet, his relentless work-rate and physical dominance provided the perfect defensive shield for Andrea Pirlo. This unlikely partnership defined a decade of success for AC Milan and the Italian national team.

Born in Corigliano Calabro in 1978, Gennaro Gattuso began his professional journey at Perugia before a controversial 1997 move to Rangers at age 19. Though his time in Scotland was brief, his tenacity quickly earned him the nickname Ringhio. By 1999, AC Milan secured his services for €8 million. It was at Milan that he formed his legendary midfield pairing with Andrea Pirlo, a tactical masterstroke by manager Carlo Ancelotti. While Pirlo orchestrated the play, Gattuso acted as the primary ball-winner, breaking up opposition attacks and providing the defensive stability that allowed his more creative teammates to flourish.

Gattuso’s career was defined by immense physical commitment and occasional volatility. He was a cornerstone of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning squad, leading the tournament with 47 successful challenges. His leadership was equally prominent; he frequently captained Milan following Paolo Maldini’s retirement in 2009. However, his intensity sometimes boiled over, most notably in a 2011 Champions League incident involving Tottenham coach Joe Jordan, which resulted in a five-match suspension. Despite his combative nature, he was widely respected for his maturity and ability to perform under pressure, even playing through a torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2008.

His transition to management proved as turbulent as his playing style. After stints at Sion, Palermo, and OFI, he found success leading Pisa to Serie B promotion in 2016. He later returned to manage AC Milan between 2017 and 2019 and secured the 2019–20 Coppa Italia with Napoli. His managerial path took him across Europe, including roles at Valencia, Marseille, and Hajduk Split, before a brief, challenging tenure as coach of the Italian national team ending in 2026. Throughout his career, Gattuso remained a figure of singular intensity, whose presence on the pitch fundamentally altered the balance of the world's most elite matches.
