From a Lincolnshire labourer to a world-class strongman and shot putter
In short: Before becoming a household name and a two-time World's Strongest Man, Geoff Capes was a troubled youth from the lowest rung of the English class system. He transitioned from loading sacks of potatoes to setting 17 world records, proving he was far more than just a "big lump."
Born in 1949 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, Geoff Capes grew up in a working-class family where he faced significant early challenges. Describing himself as a problematic adolescent possessing "inner aggression," he exited formal education at 14 to become a labourer. His physical strength developed via intense manual tasks, including moving 20 tons of potatoes into a lorry within 20 minutes at age 15.
Capes' athletic career was defined by incredible versatility and dominance. In field athletics, he was a premier shot putter, holding the British record of 21.68 metres since 1980. He was a two-time Commonwealth champion and a two-time European indoor champion. His strength extended into the burgeoning world of professional strongman competitions, where he won the World's Strongest Man twice—first in 1983 in New Zealand and again in 1985 in Portugal—and the World Muscle Power Classic twice.
His rivalry with Jón Páll Sigmarsson became a defining era for strength athletics. While Capes was a dominant force, the younger Sigmarsson eventually claimed the crown from him. Beyond the arena, Capes was a highly decorated athlete, earning 67 international caps for Great Britain and 35 for England. His fame was so pervasive in Britain that he was compared to an NFL star in the United States, even appearing in commercials for Volkswagen.
Even after his competitive peak, Capes remained active in the strength community as a coach, referee, and promoter. He also became a renowned breeder of birds, showcasing a diverse range of interests that followed his departure from the Cambridgeshire Constabulary, where he had served for ten years before resigning to pursue the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
