The unexpected literary career of Billy Graham's eldest daughter, Gigi Graham
In short: Born into the world's most famous evangelical family, Gigi Graham transitioned from a quiet life of domesticity to becoming a prolific author. Her writing career began during a period of personal depression, where she captured her thoughts on scraps of paper, eventually evolving into an inspirational ministry spanning over a dozen books.
Born in 1945 in Montreat, North Carolina, Virginia Leftwich Graham—known as Gigi—was the eldest child of Billy and Ruth Bell Graham. Her early life was marked by the rigorous expectations of her family's public ministry. At twelve, she was sent to boarding school in Florida, and by seventeen, she had enrolled at Wheaton College. It was during this period that she received a marriage proposal from Stephan Tchividjian, a Swiss-Armenian man seven years her senior. After a period of intense prayer and reflection, she accepted, and the two were married in Switzerland in 1962.
Following their return to the United States, Gigi faced the challenges of raising seven children. It was during a difficult period of depression that she began recording her reflections on scraps of paper while managing household tasks. These fragments became the foundation for her writing career. Her work, which includes more than 10 published books, often centers on themes of personal struggle, faith, and the complexities of life. Several of her projects were co-authored with her mother, Ruth Bell Graham, reflecting their shared commitment to Christian outreach.
Gigi's life has not been without significant turbulence. Her marriage to Stephan Tchividjian ended in divorce, followed by a second marriage and subsequent divorce. In 2005, she faced legal trouble after being arrested for domestic abuse, which resulted in a one-year probation period and mandatory counseling. Despite these personal trials, she eventually found a path back to her past; in 2012, she married Jim Wilson, a man she had dated during her first year at Wheaton College. Today, she remains a notable figure in Christian literature, having built a career that bridges the gap between her upbringing as a Graham and her own independent search for serenity.
