In short: Giorgio Petrosyan arrived in Italy hidden in the back of a truck, sleeping in train stations. He eventually transformed into The Doctor, a technical master of the ring who maintained a legendary six-year, forty-two fight undefeated streak. His surgical precision changed how the world viewed elite middleweight kickboxing.

Born in Yerevan in 1985, Gevorg Petrosyan emigrated to Italy at thirteen with his father and older brother. The family initially faced extreme hardship, living homeless in Milan before finding stability in Gorizia. Inspired by martial arts cinema, Petrosyan began training in Muay Thai at fourteen. Despite being initially rejected for his small stature, he persisted under coach Alfio Romanut, eventually turning professional at sixteen. His early career was defined by rapid progression through weight classes, moving from a 54 kg bantamweight to the 70 kg middleweight division where he would eventually cement his legacy.

Petrosyan’s rise to global prominence began in 2008 with his transition to kickboxing rules. He became the only fighter to successfully defend a K-1 World MAX title, winning consecutive championships in 2009 and 2010. Known for his defensive prowess and ringsmanship, he often neutralized aggressive opponents by slipping punches and landing precise counter-strikes. His dominance was so absolute that he was widely considered the greatest of all time, though his career was frequently interrupted by recurring hand injuries. These injuries forced him to withdraw from multiple high-profile bouts, including a scheduled retirement match for Japanese legend Masato.

His historic forty-two fight undefeated streak, spanning six years, finally ended in November 2013 at Glory 12 in New York. Facing Andy Ristie, Petrosyan suffered his first career knockout after breaking his hand early in the opening round. Despite this setback, he continued to compete, winning the ISKA Super Welterweight title in 2017. His journey from a homeless refugee to a world-renowned champion remains a singular story of resilience and technical mastery in combat sports, proving that supreme skill and tactical intelligence can overcome even the most daunting physical disadvantages in the ring.
