In short: Before they were a global television spectacle, the Grammys were a way to recognize industry leaders who lacked stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. What began as a local committee project has evolved into a massive, multi-platform awards ceremony with nearly 100 distinct categories.

The origins of the Grammy Awards lie in the 1950s with the Hollywood Walk of Fame project. While recording executives on the Walk of Fame committee were identifying individuals worthy of a star, they realized many influential industry figures would never qualify for a star on Hollywood Boulevard. To rectify this, they sought to create an industry-specific honor similar to the Oscars or Emmys. After considering names like the "Eddie"—a tribute to Thomas Edison—the committee held a mail-in contest. Approximately 300 contestants participated, and the winner, Jay Danna of New Orleans, submitted the name "Grammy," an abbreviation of the gramophone, Emile Berliner's invention.

The first ceremony took place on May 4, 1959, simultaneously in New York City and Beverly Hills, presenting 28 awards for achievements in 1958. While the second ceremony was the first to be televised, the event did not air live until the 13th Annual ceremony in 1971. The trophies themselves are a feat of craftsmanship; made by Billings Artworks in Colorado, the gold-plated awards depict a gilded gramophone. In 1990, the design was updated with a stronger zinc alloy called "Grammium" to prevent damage.

The scale of the awards has fluctuated significantly. In 2011, a major overhaul reduced categories from 109 to 78, eliminating distinctions between male and female soloists. However, the number has risen again, reaching 95 categories by the 68th Annual ceremony in 2026. The ceremony is also undergoing a massive broadcast shift. After over fifty years on CBS, a ten-year deal with the Walt Disney Company means that by 2027, the awards will stream simultaneously across ABC, Hulu, and Disney+.
