The high-priced lease and complex legacy of a House leader
In short: Gregory Meeks has navigated the halls of power from New York housing projects to chairing the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. Yet his career is marked by a sharp duality: a staunch defender of democratic values abroad, contrasted with domestic scrutiny over personal finances and political shifts.
Born in East Harlem and raised in a housing project, Gregory Meeks rose to become a central figure in New York's congressional delegation. Representing the 5th district since 1998, his constituency is a tapestry of African-American, West Indian, Irish-American, and Italian-American communities. His legislative influence peaked between 2021 and 2023 when he chaired the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, a role that saw him engage in high-level diplomacy, including representing Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the G20 Bali summit to discuss democratic values and climate change.
However, Meeks's tenure has not been without significant controversy. In 2011 and 2013, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) identified him as one of the most corrupt members of Congress. These designations stemmed from various allegations, including a failure to disclose a private loan on financial statements, meeting with former Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez for a donor, and purchasing a home significantly below its market value. Furthermore, a New York Times article noted that Meeks secured the highest vehicle lease within the House, employing public funds for a monthly $998 payment on a 2007 Lexus LS 460.
His political identity has also faced internal friction. He was criticized by some for his initial support of Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama, sparking a narrative of an 'older establishment' resisting a younger black political class. Despite these hurdles and ethical probes, Meeks maintained a powerful base, winning a 2011 primary with 90% of the vote. Currently, he is a key player in global affairs, specifically delaying a $2.8 billion arms deal to Israel during late 2026 because of worries regarding international humanitarian law.
