In short: The Guangdong Southern Tigers are the most dominant force in Chinese basketball, holding a record eleven league championships. Yet, for many American fans, the team is best known as the punchline of a viral Shaquille O'Neal segment that turned the team into a shorthand for NBA journeymen.

Founded in 1993, the Guangdong Southern Tigers hold the distinction of being the first privately owned professional basketball club in China. Based in Dongguan, the team has been a cornerstone of the Chinese Basketball Association since the league began in 1995. They remain the only franchise to have secured a playoff spot in every single season of the league's history, cementing their status as the most successful organization in the competition.

The team's dominance is reflected in their trophy cabinet, which boasts eleven league titles. Their rise to power began in earnest during the 2003–04 season, when they secured their first championship. This triggered a golden era where the Tigers reached the finals for eleven consecutive years, claiming the title eight times between 2002 and 2013. Beyond their league success, they have also represented Guangdong Province in the National Games of China, securing gold medals in both 2009 and 2013.

In the United States, the Tigers gained an unlikely cultural footprint in December 2011. During an episode of Inside the NBA, Shaquille O'Neal used the team as a guess for where player Aaron Brooks had signed. His comedic delivery of the phrase Ni Hao became a lasting internet meme. Today, the team is frequently referenced on social media whenever an NBA player is rumored to be heading overseas, serving as a humorous symbol for the transition of professional athletes into international journeymen.
