How a group of track athletes became Asia's basketball powerhouse
In short: In 1913, China's first international basketball squad consisted of football and track athletes with almost no specialized training. Today, the 'Team Dragon' is the most successful basketball program in Asia, having secured 16 Asian championships and 8 Asian Games gold medals through a century of evolution.
The trajectory of Chinese men's basketball began in a state of total unpreparedness. During the 1913 Far Eastern Championship Games in Manila, the team—composed of athletes from football and track disciplines—suffered an 18–56 loss to the Philippines. It was not until 1917 that the nation established its first dedicated men's basketball team, and the program faced significant geopolitical hurdles, including a unilateral withdrawal from FIBA in 1958 due to disputes over membership in Taiwan.
The program's modern dominance emerged through a shift in tactical philosophy and the rise of generational talents. In the late 1990s, the team transitioned from perimeter-focused play to an interior-centered offense. This era was defined by the 'Moving Great Wall,' a formidable frontcourt featuring Yao Ming, Wang Zhizhi, and Mengke Bateer. Yao's emergence was pivotal; after being selected as the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft, he helped re-establish China as a leading Asian power.
Despite this historical dominance, the program has faced recent volatility. After a period of resurgence in the 1990s and early 2000s—including an eighth-place finish at the 2008 Beijing Olympics—the team entered a generational transition. Recent years have seen significant challenges, including failing to qualify for the Olympics in 2021 and finishing 29th at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, marking a period of intense competition as teams like Japan and South Korea challenge China's long-standing supremacy.
