In short: Gwyndaf Evans is a name synonymous with Welsh rallying success. A former British Rally Championship winner, he mastered local terrain to secure multiple class victories, before transitioning from the high-speed intensity of international circuits to managing a legacy family business in North Wales.

Born on 4 June 1959, Gwyndaf Evans built a distinguished career in motorsport, particularly within the British Rally Championship. His competitive peak included winning the championship in 1996, following a runner-up finish in 1995. His consistency was remarkable; he secured runner-up positions in 1998, 1999, and 2010, demonstrating a longevity that spanned nearly two decades of elite competition.

Evans's success was not limited to domestic championships. He leveraged deep local knowledge to excel in the RAC Rally, securing two Group N production car class victories. His first such win came in 1990 behind the wheel of a Ford Sierra RS Cosworth 4x4, followed by a win in 1993 driving a Ford Escort RS Cosworth. While piloting a Group A Ford Escort RS2000 during 1994, he secured his third class win and a personal best seventh position overall, later reaching sixth place overall in 1995.

His international career saw him drive for various manufacturers, including SEAT—competing with the Ibiza GTI 16v and later the Córdoba WRC between 1999 and 2001—and MG, where he spent two years on the international circuit with Chris Patterson. In 2004 and 2006, he drove a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in the Wales Rally GB, winning the 2006 Mitsubishi Evo Challenge Trophy.

Today, Evans manages the family dealership in Dolgellau, a business with roots dating back to 1930 when it was established by his grandfather in Dinas Mawddwy. Renamed Gwyndaf Evans Motors in 1983, the company now supports his son, Elfyn, who competes as an international rally driver in the WRC.
