In short: Known as a drinking club with a running problem, the Hash House Harriers is an international network of non-competitive social clubs. Originating in 1938, the movement uses a hare-and-hounds format to keep runners of all speeds together, ensuring the social experience remains the primary focus of every event.

The Hash House Harriers began in December 1938 in Kuala Lumpur, then part of the Federated Malay States. A group of British expatriates, including A.S.I. Gispert and Frederick Thomson, established the tradition to mimic the classic game of hare and hounds. They named their group after the Selangor Club Annex, nicknamed the Hash House because of the poor quality of food served there. After a hiatus during World War II, the group reorganized in 1946, eventually formalizing their objectives in 1950, which included promoting physical fitness and satisfying a thirst for beer.

The mechanism of a hash is designed to neutralize fitness disparities. A 'hare' lays a trail using flour, chalk, or paper, incorporating false trails, dead ends, and 'checks' that force faster runners to search for the correct path. This allows slower participants to catch up, keeping the group cohesive. While the activity is non-competitive, it is physically demanding, often traversing swamps, forests, or city streets. The social element is paramount, with many clubs hosting 'on-afters' at pubs or private homes to continue the camaraderie.

Today, there are approximately 1,500 chapters worldwide, ranging from family-oriented groups to adult-focused clubs featuring bawdy songs. The movement has spawned various traditions, such as the Red Dress Run, which began in 1987 when Donna Rhinehart joined a hash in a red dress. This event has since raised millions of dollars for charity globally. Other variations include snowshoe hashes, underwater 'snorkel' hashes, and even disaster hashes, which are impromptu events triggered by local occurrences. Despite these creative adaptations, the core ethos remains a blend of exercise and socializing, anchored by the iconic cry of 'on-on' to signal a found trail.
