The Polish immigrant who bankrolled the American Revolution and died in total poverty
In short: Haym Salomon was a financial architect of American independence, raising critical funds for George Washington when the Continental Congress was bankrupt. Despite his pivotal role in securing the victory at Yorktown and supporting the new nation, he died penniless, his fortune lost to unpaid government debts and personal generosity.
Born in 1740 in Leszno, Poland, Haym Salomon arrived in New York City in 1775, just as the American Revolutionary War began. A skilled financier who had studied in Western Europe, he quickly aligned himself with the Patriot cause. His commitment went beyond brokerage; he joined the Sons of Liberty, endured multiple arrests by the British, and spent 18 months detained on a prison ship, where he used his German language skills to assist prisoners and encourage Hessian desertions.
After escaping to Philadelphia, Salomon became the primary financial engine for the Continental Congress. Working alongside Superintendent of Finance Robert Morris, he facilitated the conversion of French loans into hard currency and personally brokered massive donations. His most famous intervention occurred in 1781, when he raised $20,000 to fund Washington’s decisive Yorktown campaign, a moment when the army’s war chest was entirely empty and troops were nearing mutiny. Between 1781 and 1784, he helped provide over $650,000 in financing, often using his own resources to pay government salaries.
Salomon’s legacy is defined by both his patriotism and his personal sacrifice. He was a vocal advocate for religious liberty, helping to co-found Philadelphia’s Mikveh Israel synagogue and successfully lobbying to remove discriminatory religious test oaths. Yet, his financial altruism proved his undoing. He never asked for repayment on loans to the government or struggling revolutionary figures, and when he died of a heart attack in 1785 at age 44, his family was left destitute. The Continental debt he held was worth only about 10 cents on the dollar, leaving him in poverty despite his monumental contributions to the birth of the United States.
