In short: In the 160s BCE, a localized rebellion against the Seleucid Empire transformed Judea from a conquered province into a sovereign power. This Hasmonean dynasty defied the era's great empires, expanding their borders and establishing the first Jewish state since the 6th century BCE.

The Hasmonean era began with the Maccabean revolt, sparked by the actions of Antiochus IV Epiphanes. After the Seleucid ruler desecrated the Jerusalem Temple and banned Jewish religious practices in 167 BCE, a priest named Mattathias and his sons—the Maccabees—launched a resistance. Following the death of Judas Maccabeus in battle, his brother Jonathan and later Simon successfully navigated the complex politics of the Hellenistic world, securing autonomy and eventually full independence.

The dynasty's power peaked under leaders like Alexander Jannaeus, whose kingdom reached its largest extent, mirroring the scale of the ancient biblical monarchy. The Hasmonean rulers were unique in that they often combined the religious office of High Priest with the political role of ethnarch or king. This period saw significant territorial expansion into regions such as Samaria, Galilee, and Idumaea. In Idumaea, the conquest led to the integration of the local population into the Jewish people, though historians debate if this was through forced conversion or voluntary adoption.

Despite its military successes, the kingdom was eventually undone by internal instability. Civil wars, such as the struggle between the sons of Salome Alexandra, weakened the state and invited external interference. By 63 BCE, the Roman general Pompey intervened, reducing Judea to a client state. The dynasty's final flicker of independence under Mattathias Antigonus ended in 37 BCE when the Romans installed the Herodian dynasty, though the Hasmonean era remained a powerful symbol of Jewish sovereignty for generations to come.
